Parts Extraction — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does parts extraction cost?

Parts extraction costs $5–$8 USD per page ($7–$11 CAD). Pricing depends on the number of instruments, notation complexity, and whether transposing instruments are involved. Minimum project fee: $39 USD (~$55 CAD).

Important pricing details:

  • Per-page pricing applies to the output pages (individual parts), not the full score pages — a 10-page orchestral score may produce 40+ pages of parts
  • Source file required: Per-page rates apply when extracting from notation software (Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, or Finale)
  • PDF-only scores: If you only have a PDF without the original source file, the score must be engraved first — engraving fees apply in addition to extraction
  • Rush delivery is available for time-sensitive projects

Every project receives an upfront, no-obligation quote so you know the total cost before work begins. Upload your score file for a detailed estimate.

What does parts extraction include?

Each extracted part is individually formatted for performance by our human engravers — not simply auto-generated by notation software. We review every part to ensure it is immediately usable in rehearsal or performance.

Each part includes:

  • Optimized page turns: Breaks are placed so performers are not turning pages mid-phrase
  • Cue notes: Important entries from other instruments shown for orientation
  • Rehearsal markings: Aligned with the conductor’s score for easy communication
  • Multi-measure rests: With clear bar counts for long tacet passages
  • Correct transpositions: B♭, E♭, F, and all transposing instrument keys handled accurately
  • Lyrics, chord symbols, and articulations where applicable

Standard delivery is publication-ready PDFs — one file per instrument. Editable source files (Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, or Finale) are available as a paid add-on.

What file formats and notation software do you accept?

We accept source files from all major notation software: Sibelius, Dorico, Finale, MuseScore, and MusicXML. We also accept PDF scores, though working from an editable source file is faster and more cost-effective.

Our preferred tool for extraction and layout is Dorico, which offers superior engraving and part formatting. We also work with Sibelius when needed. If you have a preference, let us know.

How long does parts extraction take?

Most projects are completed within 2–3 business days. Large orchestral scores with 20+ parts may take longer. Rush delivery is available for urgent projects.

Do you add cue notes and rehearsal markings?

Yes. Every extracted part includes cue notes, rehearsal letters or numbers, multi-measure rests with bar counts, and all markings performers need for rehearsals and performances.

Can you handle transposing instruments?

Yes. We correctly transpose parts for all transposing instruments including B♭ clarinet, E♭ alto saxophone, F horn, B♭ trumpet, and any other transpositions your score requires. Concert pitch and transposed versions are available.

Can you extract parts from a PDF-only score?

We can, but PDF-only scores require re-engraving before parts can be extracted. This means additional time and cost beyond the per-page rate. If you only have a PDF, we recommend our music engraving service to create an editable score first, then extract parts from that.

Do you proofread the parts after extraction?

Yes. Every extracted part is proofread for notation accuracy, formatting consistency, and proper page layout before delivery. For scores needing deeper corrections, we can combine parts extraction with our proofreading service.

Do you guarantee accuracy?

Yes. Accuracy is guaranteed on every parts extraction project. If you find any errors in the extracted parts — wrong notes, missing dynamics, incorrect transpositions — we’ll correct them within the project scope at no extra charge.

Do you offer printing services?

Yes! We offer professional sheet music printing on premium paper with binding options. Whether you need individual copies or bulk orders, we handle everything from printing to binding and shipping. Learn more about our printing services →
