Music Notation Hub — Frequently Asked Questions

What is music transcription?

Music transcription is the process of converting an audio recording, video, or live performance into written sheet music. Our professional musicians listen to your music and notate every note, rhythm, dynamic, and articulation by ear — producing an accurate, print-ready score for any instrument.

How much does music transcription cost?

Music transcription starts at $18 USD per minute for a single instrument and ranges up to $90 USD per minute for full orchestral scores. Pricing depends on the number of instruments, complexity, and notation density. All projects have a minimum fee of $39 USD (~$55 CAD). Visit our transcription pricing page for detailed rates by instrument.

What is the difference between transcription and engraving?

Transcription creates sheet music from audio — we listen and notate what we hear. Engraving converts existing written music (handwritten manuscripts, old PDFs, rough digital files) into clean, professionally formatted digital scores. Both produce publication-ready notation, but they start from different source materials. Learn more about our music engraving service.

Do you use AI for transcription?

No. Every project is completed by professional human musicians who work by ear and by hand. AI transcription tools struggle with polyphony, complex rhythms, dynamics, and musical context. Our human experts capture nuances that software cannot — including swing feel, rubato, articulations, and idiomatic notation for each instrument.

What instruments can you transcribe?

We transcribe any instrument: piano, guitar, bass, drums, violin, cello, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, voice, organ, ukulele, and full ensembles including jazz combos, big bands, orchestras, and choirs. See our full list of instrument-specific transcription services.

How long does a transcription project take?

Most transcription projects are delivered within 2–5 business days. Complex orchestral or multi-instrument projects may take longer. Rush delivery is available when you need your score faster.

What file formats do you deliver?

Every project includes a print-ready PDF. Editable source files are available as a paid add-on in the following formats:

  • Sibelius (.sib)
  • Dorico
  • Finale (.musx)
  • MuseScore (.mscz)
  • MusicXML
  • Guitar Pro (.gp)
  • MIDI
Can you transpose my sheet music to a different key?

Yes. Our music transposition service changes the key of any piece with correct enharmonic spellings and instrument-specific notation. Starting at $10 USD per page. We handle all transposing instruments (B-flat, E-flat, F) and concert pitch conversions.

Do you offer revisions if something is not right?

Accuracy guaranteed. If there are any errors within the project scope, we correct them at no extra charge. We want you to be completely satisfied with your finished score.

How do I get started?

Send us your audio file, YouTube link, or manuscript via our contact form. Tell us what you need and we’ll provide a free quote with an estimated delivery date. No obligation, no hidden fees.
