Music Engraving FAQs
What is music engraving and how is it different from transcription?
Music engraving refers to the process of creating professional-quality sheet music from existing material, such as handwritten scores, old prints, or digital sketches. Unlike transcription, which involves writing music by ear, engraving focuses on formatting and readability using notation software.
What formats can you work with for copying and engraving?
We can work from PDF, scanned images, handwritten manuscripts, or MusicXML. We also accept source files from notation software like Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, and MuseScore. For audio files, please refer to our Music Transcription Service which is specifically designed for transcription from recordings.
What file formats will I receive?
We deliver a print-ready PDF, and upon request, we can include the original notation file (Dorico, Sibelius, Finale, MuseScore), MusicXML, and MIDI files.
Can you match the style of a PDF exactly?
Yes. If you have a professionally engraved score and want us to replicate the formatting, spacing, and layout style, we can match it as closely as possible using notation software.
Can you convert handwritten music into digital sheet music?
Yes. We specialize in music copying and digitizing handwritten scores into clear, professional sheet music using industry-standard notation software.
Can you engrave or format music for publishing?
Absolutely. We follow publisher-level engraving standards and can match house style guides if you’re submitting to a specific publisher.
Can you copy guitar tablature (TAB) as well as standard notation?
Yes. We can create accurate guitar tab with or without standard notation. Just let us know your preference. For more details, see our Sheet Music to TAB Service.
Can you clean up and format old or poorly notated scores?
Yes. We can re-engrave old or messy scores, fix spacing, align elements, and optimize layout for performance or publication.
Is there a minimum fee for engraving projects?
Yes. Our engraving and copying services start at $10/page, with a minimum fee of $29 per project.
Do you support modern and classical notation styles?
Yes. We can engrave in modern, classical, jazz, avant-garde, or graphic notation styles depending on your musical context and needs.
Can you handle orchestral or large ensemble engraving?
Yes, our team regularly works on full orchestral, choral, and ensemble layouts — including full scores and individual parts.
Do you offer proofreading as part of engraving?
Yes. Every engraving project includes proofreading to ensure musical and visual accuracy before delivery.
Can I request changes to layout or formatting after delivery?
Absolutely. One revision is included with each engraving project. Additional revisions can be arranged if needed.
Do you use Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore or Finale for engraving?
Yes. We primarily use Dorico and Sibelius for engraving, but we also support Finale and MuseScore depending on client needs.
Can you export from one notation software to another?
Yes. We can export files between Sibelius, Dorico, Finale, and MuseScore using MusicXML, ensuring cross-platform compatibility.
Can you engrave music with non-standard notation or experimental layouts?
Yes. We can accommodate graphic scores, proportional notation, and custom systems based on your artistic requirements.
Can I request a specific layout, page size, or part extraction setup?
Yes. We customize layout, paper size (A4, Letter, Tabloid, 9×12, 12×18, etc.), and part formatting for your performance or submission needs.
Can you extract and format individual parts from my score?
Yes. We offer part extraction services to create clean, well-formatted individual parts from your full score. Learn more about part extraction here.
Do you add lyrics, and in what languages?
Yes, we can engrave lyrics in English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Arabic. For other languages, we may require you to provide hyphenated text.
What’s the turnaround time for engraving projects?
Most engraving projects are delivered within 2–5 business days, depending on complexity and length. Rush delivery is also available.
