Mixing & Mastering — Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between mixing and mastering?
Mixing balances individual tracks into a cohesive stereo mix, while mastering polishes that mix for release. As iZotope’s audio education resources explain, these are two distinct stages — each requires different tools and listening environments.
- Mixing: balancing levels, EQ, compression, panning, and effects across all stems (vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths)
- Mastering: optimizing loudness, tonal balance, and stereo width for the target format — platforms like Spotify apply loudness normalization, so masters must be optimized accordingly
- Mixing works in Pro Tools, Logic Pro, or Cubase on individual tracks; mastering works on the final stereo file

What files do I need to send?
The files you send depend on the service. In our experience, clean stems with headroom produce the best results — avoid applying limiters or heavy processing to your master bus before exporting.
- For mixing: individual stems as WAV files (one file per track — vocals, drums, bass, etc.)
- For mastering: your final stereo mix as a WAV file (24-bit preferred)
- Export stems from your DAW (Logic Pro, Ableton, Pro Tools, Cubase, FL Studio) with no clipping
- Leave at least 3–6 dB of headroom on the master bus
Upload your files when you request a quote — we will confirm everything looks good before starting.
What formats do I receive?
You receive a mastered WAV file (24-bit/44.1kHz or 48kHz) and an MP3 version. If you need additional formats (DDP for CD, vinyl-optimized, spatial audio), these are available as add-ons.
How long does mixing/mastering take?
Most individual tracks are delivered in 3–5 business days. Full album projects are quoted with a custom timeline based on track count. Rush delivery is available for urgent releases.
How many revisions are included?
Every project includes one round of revisions. Additional revisions are available as an add-on. We communicate throughout the process to minimize surprises and get it right.
Can you match a reference track?
Yes. Send us reference tracks that represent your target sound and we’ll match the tonal balance, loudness, and overall feel. Reference tracks are one of the best ways to communicate your vision.
Do you master for vinyl or CD?
Yes. Vinyl and CD masters have different technical requirements than streaming masters (loudness targets, frequency response, dynamic range). We create format-specific masters optimized for each medium. These are available as add-ons.
How much does mixing and mastering cost?
Mixing and mastering are priced per track, with bundle savings when you book both. Minimum project fee is $49 USD ($69 CAD).
