Orchestration — Frequently Asked Questions

What is music orchestration?

Music orchestration is the art of assigning musical lines and harmonies to specific instruments within an ensemble. An orchestrator determines which instruments play which parts, creating the tonal color, texture, and dynamics that bring a composition to life. It transforms a piano sketch or simple score into a full ensemble or orchestral work.

What’s the difference between orchestration and arrangement?

Orchestration focuses on assigning existing musical content to instruments — choosing which instruments play which lines for the best sonic result. Arrangement goes further by potentially rewriting, reharmonizing, or restructuring the music itself. In practice, orchestration is often one component of a larger arrangement project.

How long does orchestration take?

Most orchestration projects are completed within 5–10 business days. The timeline depends on the length of the piece, the size of the target ensemble, and the complexity of the source material. Rush delivery is available upon request.

How is orchestration pricing determined?

Pricing starts at $199 USD per minute of orchestrated music. The final cost depends on the target ensemble size (string quartet vs. full orchestra), the complexity of the source material, required notation detail, and whether an audio mockup is included. Minimum project fee is $199 USD. We provide a detailed quote before starting.

Can you provide an audio mockup of the orchestration?

Yes. We can deliver a virtual instrument audio mockup alongside the notated score. This is useful for previewing how the orchestration will sound before a live performance or recording session. Audio mockups are available upon request as part of the project quote.

What formats do you deliver?

Every orchestration includes a print-ready PDF full score. You can also request:

  • Individual parts (quoted separately)
  • Source files (Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, or Finale) — available as a paid add-on
  • Audio mockups with virtual instruments
  • All files delivered via email or cloud link
Do you offer revisions?

Yes. Two rounds of revisions are included with every orchestration project. After reviewing the initial score, you can request changes to instrumentation, dynamics, articulations, or any other element. Additional revisions quoted based on scope.

Who owns the rights to the orchestration?

If we’re orchestrating your original composition, you retain full copyright — we claim no rights to our work. If we’re creating an orchestration of copyrighted material by another artist, Music Notation Hub retains the orchestration rights, with a buyout option available (quoted per project). We’ll clarify the rights arrangement before starting your project.

Do you offer printing services?

Yes! We offer professional sheet music printing on premium paper with binding options. Whether you need individual copies or bulk orders, we handle everything from printing to binding and shipping. Learn more about our printing services →
